The dining room seemed a little darker this time, like the shadows were pressing in. The air felt heavy and oppressive. I’d looked around the rest of the rooms upstairs, not sure what I was looking for. Was it supposed to be signs of another ghost or signs of Ben? He was everywhere I looked, in every object, in each room. The others had run their tests, taken their photos and consulted their crystals and apart from the ‘Talking Flame’ hadn’t encountered any activity.

“I felt a few cold spots upstairs in the master bedroom.” Steve said as he sat down.

Steve seemed to almost preen as the group considered his words. He’d asked me to be a ‘Team Player’ but I wasn’t on his team, I’d been his wingman more times than I could count but tonight I couldn’t help myself.

“Dude I didn’t feel any cold spot when I was in there, sure you weren’t just standing in a draft, this place is old, and there are cracks everywhere…” I added a shrug as if I hadn’t a care in the world, I knew what I was doing, I’d pulled the pin out of the grenade that was our friendship and I was just waiting for the explosion. Steve’s eyes rounded on me, accusation and disbelief clearly written across his face. I couldn’t find it within myself to care. It was true, I’d not felt any cold spot, but he might well have. Ben wasn’t turning out to be Steve’s biggest fan, the fact that a man who’d only known me a matter of hours could know me so well was humbling.

“Hmm, well we checked the control objects and we noticed that some of them had moved.” Jay’s voice pulled me out of my thoughts of Ben, not an easy task as Ben was all I could think about.

“So I thought we’d give this a try and see if we could get a few more answers.” Jay retrieved an Ouija Board from a bag he had by the side of his chair and set it up on the table top.

At no point tonight had I felt a cold tremor pass through me until this moment. I couldn’t explain it but I didn’t want to be anywhere near that thing. It was almost like it was giving off evil vibes.

“So, we’re going to need to be sat a little closer for this to work.” Jay indicated to the board while he placed a heart shaped pointer on the table. “Just a few ground rules before we get started, nobody ask any questions about their own future, definitely don’t ask when you’re going to die. Ugh, don’t ask if God exists and don’t ask the spirit how they died OK?”

The only person who seem pleased to be sat closer to anything was Steve who now had Lucy practically sitting in his lap. I tried not to roll my eyes at his blatant move, if she fell for all his posturing then maybe she wasn’t as smart as she looked.
